In the early morning of August 11, local time, an explosion occurred under the deck of the MSC CAPETOWN III, a container ship owned by MSC, while berthing at berth No. 4 of the JCT container terminal in Colombo Port, and a fire broke out on board.

After the accident, the Sri Lanka Ports Authority (SLPA) responded immediately. The authorities safely evacuated all operators and crew members from the ship. Firefighters worked with other port services to quickly take action to extinguish the fire and safely transfer the affected cargo.

The report emphasized that 60 containers on the deck in the affected area had been unloaded, one of which contained dangerous goods.

It is understood that the "MSC CAPETOWN III" was built in 2006 and flies the Portuguese flag. It can carry 2824TEU. Arrived at Colombo JCT from Singapore on August 11, 2024. At the time of the accident, "the ship was scheduled to unload 995 containers and load 880 containers.

On Monday, the port authority said the fire had been completely extinguished. The SLPA chairman said a full investigation would be launched to determine the cause of the explosion and the condition of the cargo. The insurance company will also conduct its own investigation.

The accident was the second explosion and fire on a container ship docked at the port in three days. On August 9, a container on the Yang Ming Marine Transport "YM Mobility" exploded and caught fire while it was anchored at Ningbo Port.

Recently, shipping accidents have occurred frequently, and there have been several container fire-related accidents. In July, a container ship "Maersk Frankfurt" chartered by Maersk also suffered a major fire, declared a general average loss, and even claimed the life of one of the crew members.

On August 12, OOCL released a warning notice from the Maritime Safety Administration and reminders and relevant regulations on dangerous goods declaration. If any dangerous goods are found to be underreported, concealed or misreported, a penalty of USD 30,000 will be charged for each container.

Misdeclaration or deliberate concealment of dangerous goods can have unforeseen consequences - Endangering the safety of life and property, causing huge economic losses, and even affecting the normal operation of the entire trade supply chain.

In recent years, many large container ships have suffered serious damage internationally. Because of the high risk of transporting dangerous goods, countries around the world, including my country, have formulated strict transportation regulations and laws and regulations.

Customers have the obligation and responsibility to ensure that the name, grade and other relevant information of the dangerous goods declared for import and export are completely consistent with the actual situation, and the packaging and transportation temperature are in compliance with the "International Maritime Dangerous Goods Code", otherwise they will bear all the consequences caused by this.
